We believe that providing learning opportunities for students is our professional responsibility. In addition the opportunities we offer therapy students to experience and deliver high-quality rehabilitation in the long-term care environment, we also provide opportunities for our therapists to engage in mentoring and teaching activities.
Types of learning opportunities include:
- Level I -- The emphasis is on direct observation and participation in a selected setting, and the fieldwork is typically for a short duration (e.g., a few hours a day, one day a week, one week).
- Level II -- The emphasis is on applying academic knowledge through in-depth experience. The duration of the fieldwork may be two to three months or longer on a full-time basis.
We have specific written processes and guidelines with respect to preceptor selection, student supervision requirements, and the clinical practice guidelines governing student involvement in evaluations and treatment, documentation and billing.
Evaluation of both the student and the facility is an ongoing process. Daily communication and continual assessment are crucial to the learning process, and an open channel of communication between the student and the therapist is vital.
